About the Artist
Barbara Szatañski

Barbara Szatañski
Barbara is an Ottawa-based visual artist whose creative curiosity has been present from an early age. Teaching her younger sister to colour and watching her older brothers draw in graphite sparked a lasting interest in making and observing, and planted the seeds for a lifelong creative practice.
More than 30 years ago, she began exploring line drawing and calligraphy, inspired by the quiet beauty of plants and the natural world. Over time, her practice expanded to include watercolour, acrylic, graphite, and marker, supported by ongoing study with a range of inspiring artists and teachers.
Her exploration of colour and shape later extended into jewellery design, where she uses wire work and gemstones to explore organic forms and structures. This hands-on investigation of line, structure, and material continues to inform her work across mediums.
Photography followed as another natural extension of her practice, becoming a way to honour her mother, who passed away from ovarian cancer. Through photography, she found a means to slow down, observe closely, and reflect on beauty, impermanence, and care.
Her studio practice offers a welcoming space to experiment, reflect, and recharge. Across all mediums, her work reflects curiosity, close observation, and a lifelong connection with the natural world.
Barbara is a founding member of Art in the Neighbourhood and has been an active participant in Ottawa’s local art community since 2016.
